Can-Am 2009 Can-Am Renegade 800R review

Speedracer has submitted this excellent review of the 2009 Can-Am Renegade 800R:

...The Renegade is built with more speed in mind than other typical 4x4 ATVs. It reminds me somewhat of current model dirt bikes, and I'm comparing it to the 2008 KTM 530 EXC-R, and the 2007 KTM 300 XC-W, and the 2006 YZ 450F I have had. None of those bikes worked real well at slow speeds. Try to ride one of them in first gear and they felt top heavy, didn't have good stability, and didn't turn all that well either. Increase speed to at least second gear, or better yet third gear, and they totally change their character, and suddenly handling is spot on perfect, and everything flows perfectly, while the effort needed to ride them correctly decreases exponentially. They are meant to go fast, not slow. The Renegade feels somewhat like that as well. The engine of the 800 R has a very pronounced lope at idle and just above idle, because of the top end cam, and it doesn't run all that smooth unless you're in the throttle, and then it runs very strong. The suspension is stiff at slow speeds. But as speed increases the Renegade starts to work the way it was meant to work, and just keeps getting better as speed increases. The thing that impresses me the most about the Renegade is the incredible precision that it can be ridden with at high speed. I have put 500+ miles on the Renegade so far, and one of the trail rides was on a trail in the mountains of central Utah that was a tight and twisty, steeply uphill trail that had a water dam jump every 100 feet. The trail was in heavy oak brush and Juniper trees, and was narrow enough that there was only about 3" of clearance between the sides of the ATV, and the trees and rocks on the side of the trail. I was absolutely amazed at how the Renegade could be ridden 100% wide open for several miles over jumps, around turns, through rocks, and all the while being in perfect control, while missing trees and rocks by mere inches. It felt perfect, with no near misses or close calls. At moderate to higher speeds the Renegade goes exactly where it is pointed, and you can put the tires exactly where you want them to be with pin point precision. Powerslides are simple, and it isn't a matter of whether you want it to slide or not, but rather, how much you want it to slide, and for how long and at what speed. The Renegade 800 R flat out rips in the right terrain...

BRP STRENGTHENS ITS CAN-AM ATV LINE-UP FOR 2009

Valcourt, Québec, May 31, 2008 – BRP's Can-Am™ all-terrain vehicles continues to be the ATV brand for enthusiasts. With its 2009 Can-Am recreation-utility and recreation-sport line-up, BRP is poised to further strengthen this position with model updates aimed squarely at riders who enjoy all-around performance.

“BRP continues to cater to the exacting requirements of the ATV enthusiast,” said Yves Leduc, vice-president and general manager, Can-Am division. "For 2009, BRP enhances the performance of its top-of-the-line RenegadeTM and OutlanderTM models allowing the Can-Am brand to satisfy even better the needs of ATV enthusiasts. We are fully committed to being the brand that is recognized for performance, handling and innovative designs."

This is just the first announcement; the full 2009 Can-Am sport lineup will be introduced in August with more updates and exciting models.

Model updates for 2009

The powerful liquid-cooled, fuel-injected 800cc Rotax® engine found in the Outlander and Renegade models gets a nine-percent power increase on the top-end for 2009. The new 800R version of the engine powers the Outlander and Renegade ATVs from 0-60 MPH (0-97 KPH) almost one second faster than the previous year's 800 H.O. engine.

*The revised calibration of the 800R engine improves power delivery, bringing to enthusiasts more manageable low RPM power for tight, technical situations and high horsepower for when the rider needs it.

*In addition to the revised power pack, the Outlander 800R models get an exclusive new styling, with a new front fascia design featuring strong Can-Am DNA cues, as well as new bumpers on the XT package version.

*The 2009 Outlander family of award-winning recreation-utility models returns as the base of the Can-Am line-up. The Outlander comes in 800, 650, 500 and 400cc engine sizes – all with EFI, each the most powerful in its class and each available as a two-rider Outlander MAX version, an Outlander XT™ value-added package version, and an Outlander MAX XT version. And, for 2009, all Outlander models come standard with a high-density polyethylene injection-moulded skid plate.

*The full-featured Outlander MAX 800R EFI LTD two-up touring model is back with a new Radiant Red Metallic coloration and with its amazing package of factory-installed amenities:removable GPS receiver, winch system, mud guards, cast aluminium wheels, and more.

The Renegade 800R EFI and the Renegade 800R EFI XTM with their new power, and
Renegade 500 EFI models return with the unique blend of sport handling and assertive
looks, combined with 4x4 capabilities. Both the Renegade 800R and 500 are also available with a new red coloration for 2009.

BRP’s entry-level recreation-sport ATV, the DS 250®, returns with updated headlights and coloration options to offer consumers comfortable ergonomics and superb entry-level performance. With these updates to Can-Am recreation-utility and recreation-sport line-up, and the return of the DS 90TM XTM, DS 90TM and DS 70TM four-stroke youth models, Can-Am is poised to meet the needs of the discerning ATV enthusiast in 2009.

“This is a way for us to keep the fans updated during our busy spring and summer of ATV racing,” says Bernard Guy, ATV marketing director at BRP. “The site will allow visitors to track the progress of the Can-Am X-Team members as they compete in all the major ATV racing competitions, including the Grand National Cross Country series and the WPSA ATV Tour. Right now fans can check on the progress of riders like John Natalie, Josh Frederick, Mike Penland, Chris Bithell and the rest of the Can-Am X-Team racers.”

Can-Am 2008 Can-Am Outlander 400 H.O. EFI ATV
Posted by CanadianViking on Tuesday, November 13, 2007 (05:04:01) (2222 reads)

Can-Am Announces 2008 Outlander 400 H.O. EFI

Now the Can-Am™ Outlander 400 H.O. comes standard with fuel injection, this gives every recreational-utility model in the Can-Am line up fuel injection! BRP is the first among its competitors to reach this milestone.

The recreation-utility category is a crowded one, but the Can-Am Outlander stands out with more standard adrenaline than any other competitor. That’s because each Outlander model features the most powerful engine in its class, electronic fuel injection, race-bred suspensions, the exclusive Visco-Lok‡ front differential and other trick features.

The Outlander 400 H.O. EFI rules the 400cc class in horsepower – and even dominates 450cc competitors.

Outlander MAX model – Outlander MAX models are designed specifically for riding with a passenger. The longer vehicle wheelbase not only delivers rock-solid stability and super predictable handling with a passenger, but one-up, too. Ability to swap seat and rack extension box without tools makes the MAX model extremely versatile.

Outlander XT model – The Outlander XT models include popular aftermarket additions, including winch with remote control and cast aluminum wheels. Carlisle ACT radial tires, bumpers and more are installed at the factory. Buyers opting for the XT model save money over purchasing and installing all these features separately. Plus, these items are covered by the factory warranty.

You can read the complete announcement HERE. You can discuss the new 2008 Outlander 400 H.O. EFI in our CAN-AM FORUM.
