ATV Trails
As part of the Special Places 2000 process the fate of one of the most scenic and challenging ride areas in west central Alberta will be decided. In December 2000 of the provincial government in a rush to appease the WWF and others in the green lobby designated a number of protected areas.

One of these areas was the Rock Lake-Solomon Creek Wildland Provincial Park. Located 40 kilometers north west of Hinton, this area has provided ATV users with one the most scenic and best rides in the area. Having talked to many other riders it has become apparent this area not only has strong local interest, but strong interest from other areas of the province.
One of the more frustrating aspects of the Special Places 2000 process was that in the rush that came with sites being designated was a total lack of management plans for these areas. As a result ATV users were locked out of some of the best riding areas in Alberta. To add insult to injury, use that only a few months before had been allowed was now considered illegal. On the positive side local users have formed clubs and have been lobbying government and local industry with some effect.
The government has used a number of reasons for the closure and soon a public input process will begin to determine what the management plan for the area will allow. During the Special Places 2000 process a local committee was struck to advise the government on the suitable management of the sites for Yellowhead County including the Rock Lake-Solomon Creek Wildland Provincial Park. This local committee advised many things one of which was that the trail to Moosehorn Lake be kept open to ATVs. Of course this local input seems largely to have been ignored. Another aspect is that the Parks service, now a section of the Community Development ministry, will be responsible for the management of this area. This is far from encouraging for ATV users, with some help from the Provincial government I was able to discover that Community Development administer over 500 protected areas throughout the province. When I searched the CD website (www.cd.gov.ab.ca) under gateway and used ATV or OHV as activities it returned only 41 sites where these activities are acceptable.
As this process is just commencing it is uncertain what will happen. In order to try and preserve ATV access to this area, I would like to hear from anyone who has used this area and would like to see it opened to ATV traffic. When contacts become available to the government’s public input I would post these contacts to this site.

Magnum,

You might want to drop gadzuk an email or PM. He is very active in this area and might be able to provide you with some insight. Or post this in a forum and I'm sure he'll pipe up.

Cheers,
Ronin
