News › ATV Industry to fund education efforts of Alberta & British Columbia Federations

Yamaha of Canada TriWorks Industries

News The Canadian All-Terrain-Vehicle Distributors Council (CATV) has announced a grant of up to fifty thousand dollars to the Coalition of Alberta and British Columbia ATV federations and clubs. These funds will be used by the Coalition to assist their efforts to educate the public and government officials about the positive contributions that all-terrain vehicles and their associated activities make to the economy and environment of those two provinces.

Representatives of the Coalition have been attending public hearings and land management meetings across Alberta and British Columbia to try to ensure that a balanced picture is provided of ATV usage.

ATVs play a significant role in protecting the environment by replacing heavier equipment such as tractors, trucks and forestry machinery that can have a much more impact on the ecology. ATVs are used in many ways such as farming, oil and gas exploration, forestry, search and rescue, by the military as well as in family recreation and tourism.

During the past two years issues of ATV access to trails, and of large parts of the western provinces being closed entirely to ATV traffic, have attained a higher media profile as various environmental groups have used strident rhetoric to voice their concerns about the impact
of ATVs.

The potential negative effect on the economy, the environment and industrial and recreational users of ATVs could be significant if the government acted on these one-sided views. The ATV industry, through the CATV, is working with user groups and dealers to present a more balanced view of ATV usage.

The Canadian All-Terrain Vehicle Distributors Council, originally founded in 1984, is a national, non-profit, trade association that represents the responsible interests of the major ATV distributors, as well as the manufacturers, distributors and retail outlets of ATV-related products and services, and individual owners and riders of all-terrain vehicles in Canada.
