News › 2009 Can-Am Renegade 800R review

Speedracer has submitted this excellent review of the 2009 Can-Am Renegade 800R:

...The Renegade is built with more speed in mind than other typical 4x4 ATVs. It reminds me somewhat of current model dirt bikes, and I'm comparing it to the 2008 KTM 530 EXC-R, and the 2007 KTM 300 XC-W, and the 2006 YZ 450F I have had. None of those bikes worked real well at slow speeds. Try to ride one of them in first gear and they felt top heavy, didn't have good stability, and didn't turn all that well either. Increase speed to at least second gear, or better yet third gear, and they totally change their character, and suddenly handling is spot on perfect, and everything flows perfectly, while the effort needed to ride them correctly decreases exponentially. They are meant to go fast, not slow. The Renegade feels somewhat like that as well. The engine of the 800 R has a very pronounced lope at idle and just above idle, because of the top end cam, and it doesn't run all that smooth unless you're in the throttle, and then it runs very strong. The suspension is stiff at slow speeds. But as speed increases the Renegade starts to work the way it was meant to work, and just keeps getting better as speed increases. The thing that impresses me the most about the Renegade is the incredible precision that it can be ridden with at high speed. I have put 500+ miles on the Renegade so far, and one of the trail rides was on a trail in the mountains of central Utah that was a tight and twisty, steeply uphill trail that had a water dam jump every 100 feet. The trail was in heavy oak brush and Juniper trees, and was narrow enough that there was only about 3" of clearance between the sides of the ATV, and the trees and rocks on the side of the trail. I was absolutely amazed at how the Renegade could be ridden 100% wide open for several miles over jumps, around turns, through rocks, and all the while being in perfect control, while missing trees and rocks by mere inches. It felt perfect, with no near misses or close calls. At moderate to higher speeds the Renegade goes exactly where it is pointed, and you can put the tires exactly where you want them to be with pin point precision. Powerslides are simple, and it isn't a matter of whether you want it to slide or not, but rather, how much you want it to slide, and for how long and at what speed. The Renegade 800 R flat out rips in the right terrain...
