Two thoughts fro a new guy:
though 1. I think you need to consider the term "sportsman". A hunter who is a sportsman respects the land and the wildlife on it. Same for a fisherman.
An ATVer can also be s sportsman in that he respects the land and the wildlife, etc on it.
It seems hat most of the comments were addressing those who abuse the land while persuing their sport.
Hunting is fine when it is done ethicly. ATVing is fine when it is done ethicly.
thought 2. I remember reading that Wilderness (capital W) users spend the least money; motorized users the most.
Thought 3. So waht? What's wrong with having income from multiple sources?

My take on thought 2, the Wilderness people (read environmentalists) that I am aware of, spend the least of THEIR money, they are all for spending MY money on their pet projects.
