I know this forum is dedicated to Gorilla Axles but I came across an online petition that a guy from Oklahoma has started to make ATVs street legal in the US.
Here is the link if you wish to sign the petition:
www.thepetitionsite.co...cycle-laws
I know stock ATVs might be dangerous to ride on the open road but I am sure great companies like Gorilla, Xtreme Products, or HighLifter would come up with a conversion kit that would make your ATV street worthy. This could open up a whole new market. ATV industry can use something new in these tough economic times and with CPSC banning the sale of youth ATVs this would maybe help the industry.
In Europe and in some states in the US people have the ability to make their ATVs street legal much in the same we can make dirt bikes street legal here in the US. Quads when made street legal or if you would purchase a street worthy quad go under the classifications of Quadricycles. There are already manufactures making or in the process of making road worthy quads such as the Revolver concept from Polaris, Bourget’s Shredder F-80, the Quadrazuma by Lazareth, and GG Motorrad Technik's GG Quadster.
Thank you
Bryan

I've brought this up a million times. Especially here in Canada, our gov't is far too controlling to let us have fun and ride atv's on the street. They will tell us that ATV's arent made for the street and arent tested for street riding blah blah blah. Meanwhile any grease monkey can chop a harley and weld on 6 foot long forks in his garage and (while probably stoned) make a trike out of it and get it street legal no problem. While a professionally welded and engineered ATV cant get approved for street use. So it begs the question, are the Germans and most other EU countries a bunch of back ass hillbillies that legislate anything for the road even though it isn't safe or are they more progressive and outside the box thinking to allow it with the proper tires and signals? You be the judge. A polaris "quadracycle" in Germany is the exact same ATV as sold here but with radial tires, signals and brake lights.

one other issue besides the lites and signal lites is the locked rear diff. I've ridden all my quads on the blacktop. I really don't like it so much. The cost of the upgrades needed would far outweigh the benefits.

All my quads and Rhino are street legal. I have insurance, plates and have to pass emission tests every year. Mainly for compliance with National Forest laws so I can ride on any road in the forest. I rarely ride on pavement or in town. The family does like taking the Rhino out at xmas time to look at lights...

I can ride my ATVs pretty much anywhere but down the state highways, provided I have liability insurance, drive with my lights on, and have a safety flag. Don't even need any special lights, as hand signals are good enough. I can drive it up & down any street in town. Some of the bigger towns have an ordinance against that, but not close by.

Wyoming and Utah both support street legal ATV's. I dont license mine, but all you have to do is-
-Install rearview mirrors
-Install horn
not sure about turn signals, but I think you can just use the arm method.

Montana has similar laws provided you do not drive on roads posted above 55 MPH.
I am in the process of upgrading my quads to street legal status.
Think of it this way.
1. You are out on a ride leading a group of people that have not been on that trail before? Signal lights make it easier to let them know that a difficult turn is coming up.
2. You are in a group out riding but are not the leader. How do you let the leader know that there may be a problem or want to ask a question (R U thirsty? I M)? Use the horn.
3. You are out riding at night but want to see something behind you. Rear work (reverse) lights.
4. You have your quad at a friends place and want to also ride down to the store. You are already set up and those rear racks can hold a lot of rectangular boxes.
Most of these parts are already available for the Euro ATV's. Online part micro fiche's can give you the part numbers and even order the parts for you.
Cheers

I have seen what happens when an Polaris 500 meets up with a 18 wheeler, the Polaris is like a dog standing in the road, truck cannot even feel the contact. The guy is lucky to be alive although he has permanent disability because of the unfortunate encounter. ATV rider could not perceive how fast the 18 wheeler was going and pulled out when there was not chance of making it.
ATv's are just to inherently dangerous to be on the roads mostly because they attract younger riders who will take risks. And as someone mentioned above, the gov't is watching out for you so you don't hurt yourself. It won't be long before the will make you wear a helmet any time you leave your house.

They want to use the atv for hiway use to cut down on expenses buying a 2wheeler would add to them. Of course living would be good too.

Most M/C's are DESIGNED to operate on the highway, an ATV is not and that's the big difference.
