Well considering the new Polaris Engine is completely new I would have to reserve judgment to see about things such as durability and other items associated with it to give a fair judgment. I f your wanting to know in a race I would take the 800r as it is a V twin as the 850 is an opposing twin which by design does not make the low end torque a V Twin makes.

The 850 is not an opposing twin. They are still side by side. Mated cylinders. It actually fires at 270 degrees.
Anyway. I think this is the shoot out eveyone is waiting on. I cancelled my 850 and picked up an 09 800R Renegade. I am a bit concerned about the airbox - EFI setup on the 850. Any water at all goes straight down to the throttle body.

is Fuji still building their engines - I know the liberty engine was supposed to be an inhouse design but who is actually manufacturing for them now. I do not know since we do not sell them anymore.

They built the liberty I think in the same place they make the 700&800 snow machine engine. If you look at the new popo engine it's way to advanced to be built by popo.

I thought that ROTAX was owened by BRP is some way. It would be intresting to see if BMW/ROTAX/BRP had something in common.

FYI,
The company was founded in 1920 in Dresden, Germany as ROTAX-WERK AG. In 1930 it was taken over by Fichtel & Sachs AG and transferred its operations to Schweinfurt/Germany.
Operations were moved to Wels, Austria in 1943 and finally to Gunskirchen in 1947. In 1959, Rotax merged with the Vienna-based Lohner-Werke, a manufacturer of car and railway wagon bodies. In 1970 Lohner-Rotax was bought by Bombardier, who uses Rotax engines in their motorcycles, personal water craft, and snowmobiles[1].
The company constructed only two-stroke engines until 1982, when it started building four-stroke engines and aircraft engines. Other important dates include 1962, when a Rotax engine was first installed in a snowmobile and 1989, when Rotax received Type Certification for its 912 A aircraft engine.
In 2008 Rotax start manufacturing the 1125cc Helicon liquid-cooled, four-stroke, fuel-injected 72˚ V-Twin for the Buell Motorcycle Company.
