5th Annual REBELS Ride to Margaret Lake a Tremendous Success
By RedRon (Ron Edwards), CQS Member
On Saturday morning, November 8, 2008, under ideal weather and trail conditions for November, 58 riders on 55 quads assembled at the South Ghost PRA staging area in the Ghost Forest Land Use Zone (FLUZ). The riders ranged in age from 11 to 70, and from novice to expert skill levels.
Shortly after 10:00 a.m., the advanced group of riders, led by Toadman (Todd Lamond) and Mudbath (Bob Jackins) roared off westwards towards Waypoint #11. Because of their expected speed, the route for advanced and intermediate groups was 13 km longer than the family group route, and with more and steeper hills. The plan was that all the groups would arrive at Margaret Lake for the BBQ at the same time as the Family groups led by Skiboat (Kevin Fex) and Terry Becker and followed up by 07Blkfx4 (Chris Lemay). The Intermediate group followed the same trail as the advanced group, which was led by Hoadley Bob (Bob Bolton) and Geotech (Christine Ross). The plan worked well. The groups were delayed by two sidewall slits and a blown fuse in the faster groups.
The Family group, of which I was a part, headed north to 4-corners and then west to Waypoint #129 before heading north east to Margaret Lake. The faster groups headed north from Waypoint #11 to Waypoint #167 before heading southwest in Margaret Lake. In the meantime, Calgary Quad Squad President Don McKay (DonsQuads), having collected the event registration papers, headed up the road to Camp Chamisol. He, along with his assistants, hauled in the tables, BBQs, prizes, 6 dozen hotdogs, 10 dozen smokies, and three big containers of Tim’s coffee and hot chocolate. Transportation was accomplished with a trailer behind Don’s ATV and with Gina and Kerry volunteering their Rhino and Mule. A blown tire and bent axle on the trailer would create a challenge for the return trip. Don, assisted by Gina Peters, Kerry Davis and Donna Bartholomeu, had a bonfire roaring, the smokies bbq’ed and other food ready by the time the hungry riders descended on the Lake from various directions.
The group wolfed down the smokies and coffee, exchanged stories and advice, threw sticks for Taffy the Quad Dog, and generally had a great gabfest. GrizzlyBill and Angel told me about their good experience in the ATV certification course offered by Hidden Trails Adventures Ltd., with discounts for CQS members. After lunch, nearly everyone won one or more prizes in a prize draw conducted by Toadman. The generous prize contributors included: GPS Central, , Pro-Am Motorsports, Ralph’s Motorsports, GW Cycle, Bow Ridge Sports in Cochrane, Blackfoot Motorsports, Universal Cycle, Coca-Cola, Mac Tools, ATV Frontier, Enerplus and Siggi Perchout of the 2nd Gear Club, Food and drinks were graciously supplied by ATV Frontier and Rocky Developments Ltd.
On the way back to the staging area, we took the cut line straight east from 139 to 141. At times, I thought it was as much straight up and straight down as it was straight east, but I am sure the hills look steeper to 62 year old novices like me than they do to the rest of the riders. On the return leg, I actually PASSED Toadman! But only because, he had de-beaded a tire and his machine was on its side while under repair. Somehow he and the 53 other quads beat me back to the staging area. We loaded our machines in the near darkness, and headed back to our homes, feeling great about the wonderful scenery and camaraderie we had enjoyed in the Alberta foothills.
The comment most often heard during the day: “When is the next event?!!!”
