just baught a new taurus tracker 44mag and a ruger "youth" model 308 bolt action. I also carry a springfield arms XD 45. Every one laughs when I say a 45acp for a bear gun. but with 180gn. nitro express bronze tip home loads I don't think that I would have a problem with a bear coming at me. I know that I wouldn't want to go into a "hive" of 45's flying at me. I figure 15 rounds of 45 flying at him should do the trick as appose to 5 44's

Well, back here in PA, most of the time, I could carry a "pea-shooter" and be pretty well protected. icon_mrhappy Although, on one occasion, we did have a couple of wild dogs chase us. My son spun his CAT around in the wink of any eye and went right at them. They decided to stop chasing us in a hurry. Yellow-badgrin

Since that time, I always carry my Kershaw hunting knife... just in case.

If I lived up in Alaska, that S & W 500 Mag in 50 cal. would be my choice if I was just riding my quad. That's a sweet "piece".

Ahh the 500 is nice but you get almost twice the velocity and a pistol you can group with at 200 yards with the 460 much sweeter gun and you can shoot 454 460 and 45long colt out of it. far better gun for around the same price.

It all depends on the time of year, in the fall if I'm walking I usually have the shotgun for grouse, usually my Browning BPS 28ga. In deer and season I have my Browning BLR .300 WSM and Ruger M77 MKII .25-06, or if I'm wolf hunting or varmint hunting I have my Browning Sporter .220 Swift.

Ron
"It's better to have a .22 in your pocket, than a .45 in the closet." A guy in our area about 2 weeks ago killed a Black Bear tearing up his camp site. ONE SHOT with a .22!!!! 2gunsfiring V1

Anywhere we go we carry either a .22 or the .40 cal, cant be too careful. In our quadding we have seen several things that made me uncomfortable and alert, mostly in our desert riding.

I'm really hoping that the box that 629 is sitting in, isn't an "exhibit box" from the coroners office??? What the heck happened???

Aside from my .454 Ruger Alaskan and my survival bag, I make sure I have a tarp and I carry a Cold Steel Trail Bowie. This knife is awesome for cutting through brush. Heck I have even split firewood with it. It is indespensible, once when I overturned my atv, the brush was preventing me from getting to a posistion to where i could get the thing flipped back over and having that knife was just the ticket. Stays sharp, costs about 70.00 dollars, and has the heft for chopping. I can't say enough about it. It's a necessity.

Let's be a Forensic time,,, possibly a misfire that went off as the cylinder was rotated. Or a heavy homemade reload.
