I've been carrying this Ruger Alaskan in .454 Casull for 3 years, I picked up one of the first ones in June '05. It's a very accurate little gun, and surprisingly pleasant to shoot and carry, the gun recoils straight back into my hand with little muzzle flip. Why the .454? I’ve used this caliber since 1988, when I bought my first Freedom Arms handgun chambered for it, and I believe it’ll slow down anything that walks in North America. I’ve been reloading for the .454 since 1988, and with mild loads it’s very easy to shoot. I have property that borders the edge of the grizzly bear protection zone and spend a lot of time there cutting wood, picking huckleberries, and just wandering around. I’ve run into lots of black bears but never a grizzly, the black bears usually take off but some are very inquisitive. Pictured with the gun is a nice pancake holster made by Rob Leahy in Alaska.

I carry a Super Redhawk .44 Mag 7 1/2 inch barrel and since my shooting capacity with a pistol is questionable. It also will function as a club and that is something I can use with proficiency.

I used to work in Rio Rancho - wasn't based there, but would often spend time there. Nice place. I considered relocating a couple of times, I was there enough that it made more sense to move.

I carry safety matches, hatchet, space blanket, folding shovel and extra water when in the wild. But if I am around where a thousand people have been and fed the animals one way or another (by accident or on purpose) I carry a shotgun with double OTT buck.

Up here I carry my Browning Lever Action 308 whenever I ride, you never know when Mr. Polar Bear might crash the party.

I'll carry my Ruger 9mm, with the older, larger, clip, full in case of two legged critters that want trouble.!
Sawed off lever action 30-30 for ease of carrying might be along too. Oh, then there's one of my sawed off, or short barreled 12 guages, with OO Buck that works real well too!
Depends on when, where, who else is along, etc.
I'd rather be OVER qualified to handle any problem, and take the ribbing, than UNDER qualified and take the unknown!!

I guess it depends on where I'm going and the season. One of the two, either my Springfield XD .45...
Or
my Smith and Wesson 500 Magnum .50 cal.... The .38 is just for the occasional CCW. Usually CCW is the XD.

Mossberg 500 .12 ga, with 2 3/4 mag reduced recoil slugs and "00" buck mixed bag.
Not to afraid of animals here in Idaho, but the 2-legged variety of wolf in the back country can have issues once in a while.
Oh, also carry an AR-15 pistol once in a while.
