Had been running every other day and lifting in my off days from running up until Monday. Started getting shin pain pretty bad and it just wouldn't go away. Turned out to be a stress fracture around one of the pins in my leg. No more running for at least six weeks doc says.

He did recommend that I try to find something that doesn't stress the bones/pins so much once I heal up.

Any suggestions on which machines to look at so I don't have to deal with this again in the future. For now I am limited to just doing my upper body weight lifting. I thought about a stationary bike but I have always hated them and would like something that I can involve my upper body in as well.

A bicycle works good, as well, and lets you get outside & see the outside world.

Swimming and bike only work well in good weather (no pools close enough that I would be willing to go to three days a week.) Almost an hour drive to the nearest one that I could use.

I do have a bike and use it occasionally but in the winter with icy roads it would be a death trap. I was running indoors on a tread mill in the event of rain or cold weather.

Basically I am looking for something that I can use when I dont want to ride my bike due to weather during the summer and through the winter as I don't really like to be outside when the temp is 20 or more degrees below zero.

Well i have been working on my sheep hunt training which consists of squatting once a week, rigourous cycling 2 to 3 times a week, hiking with weight(increase weight every week) and some upper body lifting depending on how thw body feels. This will be my routine until August

Started a new job in down town Calgary on 17th ave, I live in McKenzie Towne 25.5K one way by mountain bike on the Bow river path way, 51K round trip. Been commuting by my trusty old mountain bike twice a week for the past three weeks. It's a leg burner. They will be pipes again in no time. When I turn 49 in August I want to be able to say I'm 49 and in the best shape of my life. Yellow-rolleyes
Now I just got to get up a little earlier and get back on the pushing Iron thing a couple mornings a week.

Wycked_1,

That is one of the reasons that I work out lol. I was overweight before my bike wreck last year and the lack of physical exercise for most of the past year due to injury/doc's restrictions while I healed didn't help at all. For some odd reason chicks just don't dig fat guys all that much lol.

Your previous suggestion dose have merit though now that I think about it. I go up to my moms cabin to fish at least twice a week might be able to throw a swim in when I go up there for the time being. Will have to call the doc and see what he has to say about it Monday. Learned the hard way last fall about listening to him and ended up re injuring myself which set my recovery back months and cost me a couple of extra surgurys to fix the damage again.

I meant S e x as an exercise not as a goal, but hey whatever works. Swimming is by far better than running no impact. Just don't overdo it. Ken keep up the good work.

Hey guys,

Name is Wayne, and I'm the new guy to these parts. I jumped on the board to do some research for a buddy, but now I'm wanting an ATV, so I'm staying, and doing more research.

ANYWAYS....

I'd like to offer myself to you guys. I am a certified personal trainer and have some time under my belt with clients. I've learned from guys I've worked out with, both good AND bad things about the gym. PLUS, the other trainers I worked with over the years have helped me become more 'well rounded' with different areas of the gym and training.

If you have any questions or just want some suggestions to help you change things up or make them interesting, please, send me a message and I'll do my best, even if I have to go do some research and get back to you.

Lastly - just to help out a bit before I go....Mud - your issues with shin splints/stress fractures - very common in people that run on pavement quite a bit, and even worse for someone like you with 'hardware' in your legs. My suggestion for you is to get on an "elliptical runner". There's 2 types I've seen in the market (and it might have changed a little since I stopped training the end of last year) - there's one that is like the older skiing machines, with 2 handles for an upper body/arm workout. The other is more geared towards a 'stair climbing' action, but it doesn't have revolving steps. Both are NO IMPACT machines, and have setting from "2 left feet" (beginners with no coordination) to "NYC marathon" (well conditioned). Start off with one, try it for 5-10 minutes to see if you feel comfortable with it, and try the other one as well. I personally HATE the treadmill, as well as running (spent 12 years in the USMC, I hated running from day 1). I too get shin splints if I run on pavement or do high impact for any length of time, so I take it easy myself, and stick to the cardio like mentioned. 45 min MAX, more towards the 30 min limit, just because you get into a muscle burn/consumption stage because your body wants more protein and muscle is all that (and some water).

I don't want to ramble on, but I want to also give that disclaimer that you should get checked out by your doctor to make sure you're physically able and 'safe' to proceed with working out. I also suggest if you can afford it, and 'need' it, to hire a trainer, even if its once every 2 weeks to help write up a workout program, or more times if you don't have a partner to 'push you to the limit'. Just make sure you do all the exercises safely, controlled movements from start to finish, and don't overload the weight because 'someone' is watching icon_pelvic_thrust2

Anyhows....good luck....I'll go back and start reading this from the start to get some more 'history' on you all in case there's something else I can help with.

-Cheers.

Thanks for the input and welcome to ATV Frontier!

As a matter of fact I am going to pick up the first style that you mentioned on Saturday. A friend of mine has one that she doesn't use and is giving it to me for free. Will be trying it out just as soon as the doc gives me the ok.

Its been a month....anyone have any updates ?

I've wretched my back to the point where I have a pinched nerve or something, so I'm down to 70% or so til I get in with a Chiro and get straightened out (prior back issues).

Hoping to get fixed up this summer still....can't spend winter all jacked up....lol. Sleeping sucks.

I have still been working on my upper body, doc still hasn't cleared me to do anything with the lower body yet. Getting close to what I used to lift now though. Did my reps at 340 on the bench this morning another 35 pounds and I will be where I was when I quit lifting.

On the bright side I have been getting in lots and lots of fishing lol. Had the last 11 days off from work and boated just a bit over 500 fish (mostly crappies and sunfish but a few pike and one walleye).

Gotta go see the doc again at the end of the month so we will see what they say then for my leg. Looking forward to trying out that new machine.

Hi guys...

I haven't posted in a while. For me, my body weight recently went from 181 lbs up to 193 lbs and now back down to 189 lbs (weigh in this morning). A little "speed bump" on the road because my wife had 1/2 her thyroid removed. Thus, her down time and the situation's stress turned my entire exercise routine off (which drove my BG numbers nuts). Now, I'm back on track and back into a rountine. Routine of daily exercise. Especially exercise after each meal. On the T2 Diabetes battles, my BG numbers are back to being great as well. For the last few days, I've been getting BG numbers in 5.x mmol range. Thus morning, I got a 4.6 mmol number. If wondering, a BG number 4.3/4.4 mmol is perfect normal body range. Any numble above 7.x before a meal and 2 hours after a meal in considered Pre-Diabetec. And, needs immediate lifestyle improvements. Today, one can say my BG numbers are better then many "normal body folks" - who don't exercise and continue to shove "junk food" into their bodies.

Hope others are doing their daily exercise as well. And, we continue to pace "pace ourselves" like the wise old turtle. Slow and steady wins the battles. (giant smile).
