I was wondering if anyone her in Calgary has done this mod? If so were did you get the spacers? Do you need any special tools. It sounds like you need a special puller. Did you do the springs as well? I am a little hesitant to do the springs. If I just do the spacers will I see a difference in performance? Thank you for you help.

I have a Copperhead ECU from www.velocitydevices.com/ that solved the actual problem with the low end lag a la Suzuki, thus negating the need to perform the Coop mod.
Dalton clutch kit from Velocity Devices will help too...$146.00 and easy to install.
Cheers

Even with the copperhead, the Coop mod is a good idea. It reduces the overall gear ratio by about 5% across the board and makes technical stuff much easier and more fun, because the King is actually overgeared by about that much from the factory.
Mind you, the 450 is already geared lower than the 700. The coop45 mod was made for the 700 and I don''t know if the clutches are the same re: thisd mod's applicability.
These spacers are available from Yamaha dealerships as adjustment shims for the secondary clutch on a 1999 Mountain max 700 snowmobile.
90201-225A4-00 WASHER, PLATE (Thickness=1.0)
90201-222F0-00 WASHER, PLATE (Thickness=0.5)
2 MM of shim is the max you can go before both running out of spline, and running out of clearance inside the front clutch cage.
This mod basically lengthens the primary collar by 2mm longer.

How long did it take? Was it intensive or not? Did you use the spacers from Yammy that glenlivet posted above? If so, did you go 1MM or the max 2.0MM?

I just read through it again...it's dead simple. Coop45 deserves a big thumbs up for that one.
Thanks for clarifying how it benefits the KQ even with the Copperhead, Glenlivet.
Here is the fiche that shows where the 2mm shims (2 x 1.0MM shims) go, between parts 1 and 4. Use shims that are 22mm ID and 32.5mm OD.

I thought I had read somewhere that you need a special tool to get things apart. Is this true?

Kirk sorry I missed your last question.
You need a spring compression tool if installing a clutch kit...see part #7 in the fiche. The shims go on the other side, so you don't have to worry about the spring compression too.

I did the mod and I think it makes more difference then my VDI
I did 1.5 mm with the Yamaha parts (about $7. )

Yup, I did my 750 and am really pleased. I also put in an EPI yellow secondary spring and lighter weights.
I like the bottom end now and I can still hit 64 on top with 27" MST's. Which is plenty for me

Toban, how long did it take you? No special tools required, right?
I've very little spare time, and want to do this, but don't want to have a make-work project taking up space in my garage. I might even do this at the cabin on my vacation if it's not that involved. It looks easy enough, but so far, I've not had anyone say how involved they actually found it to be once they started.
Cheers

Sorry, I should clarify. I had it done. The dealer did it. I wanted the other stuff done too and don't have a spring compression tool for the secondary and like you, time is a huge issue.
For the shim, all you'd need is a spanner tool to hold the clutch while you remove the center bolt. Some people have just made them.
Have you seen the Tech Tip section on Nyroc? There is lots of info on there with pictures as well.

The shim will take about 5 mins. Thats not counting the 1 hour to remove the florrs boards etc.
