Replace the stock paper air filter as soon as you purchase your quad, or as soon as possible thereafter. There is a defect in the stock filter that lets dust through to the engine.
Ideal replacements:
Twin Air part number is #153915c for the complete filter and cage
Twin Air part number #153915 for the filter element
K & N part number #SU-7005 for the filter
K & N part number #SU-7005DK for the drycharger/filter cover
Uni part number is #NU2486ST

What do you mean defective? what is defective? I looked at mine, and it looks OK on my new 2007 KQ?
Please explain?

Hi Coop44, Welcome to the Frontier!
It allows dust through to the engine. It's been reported time and time again that there is simply something about the stock paper filter that is ineffective against dust in particular. It's either that it does not seat/seal well or something in the filtration matter.
Either way, it's highly recommended that it be replaced asap.
I put a K&N in mine.

Is the filter used on the KQ700 identical to the one on the kq450?
It seems all the parts books don't have listings for kq450 parts, so I gotta ask...

I don't know if it's the same part number, but if it's a plain white paper filter, chuck it, get a Twin Air or K & N...your dealer should be able to make sure you get the right one.

How much is everyone paying for the K&N filter? I just ordered mine (should be here on Friday) and it cost me $62...

Anybody have problems getting the filter wet from the gap at the top of the airbox, even just from washing quad?

after a little research of making sure the two were the same 450/700 i ordered from www.jrgraham.com a uni-filter. the reason i researched was i could not find it for the 450/700 on there website. but in there catalog it was listed for the 700. so i went to the website and punched in they're part number of...uf2486.
i belive it was 26.00 shipped....

I also went with the Uni. It was 35.00 from Walt Healy. Of course, the KQ only has .2 hours on it yet...just long enough to warm it up and load it in my truck! Tee Hee Hee. The filter will not be in until wednesday afternoon though...so the inaugral run will with the paper filter.

How many are runnng a K&N filter and are happy with it. I have one in my quad and just want to make sure it does a good job. the cleaners for the Twinair are stupid expensive. If needed I could clean a K&N with a bucket of fresh water and re-charge it and be ready to go.
