are you really suppose to stop to engage 4wheel drive or can you let off the throttle and then engage it. shifting on the fly will it mess it up?

I only slow down and let off the throttle to switch between 2 -4WD. However, I stop,or nearly stop to go from high to low or vice versa

You definitly have to slow down to like 2kmph then you can shift betweeen 2WD and 4WD, my dad has an 07 650 and he engaged 4WD at like 5kmph and it made an dreadfull grinding sound when it engaged.

I used to do the same thing untill I broke mine, I saw the bill, I had to sign it, it was a little over $1800.00 but fixed under warranty.
Now I come to a complete stop then engage 2wd or 4wd.

you should stop - does not take a second to brake then get back on it - I usually if I ride a utility put it in 4WD if the terrain looks like it is going to get nasty before I ever get there

I recommend stopping or nearly stopping to engage to 4wd.. and then give the throttle a slight burp before really getting on it.. there is a sliding coller in there that joins 2 splinded shafts. If you are stopped and shift it, the coller may not totatly engage the forward shaft until it moves again.
