Does anyone know what I would need to legally be in possesion of a rifle? My dad is done with moose hunting for good and was going to get rid of all his guns and gave me the 30-06. I don't plan on doing any hunting I just want it ...well just because. I put this in "Rebels" in order to get 'Alberta Specific' replies. Any info appreciated.

John, You need to go to the RCMP and get yourself a Firearms acquisition Certificate. Then you need to keep the gun locked up in a cabinet. They can give you the specifics on the size of lock you need to use.

You will need to take a firearms safety course recognized Canada wide to be eligable for the licence if you have not had a FAC in the past. Most Fish and Wildlife organizations offer this course for a reasonable cost, around $60 when I took it a few years back. You can also challenge the exam. If you have any practical experience with firearms, and can read and write english, you will probably ace the exam. You will also need a passport style photo for the licence.

MP HOEPPNER’S BILL TO END LONG-GUN REGISTRY PASSES VOTE IN HOUSE OF COMMONS

MP Pleased Bill C-391 Will Advance

Ottawa, Ontario – MP Candice Hoeppner’s Private Member’s Bill to end the long-gun registry passed an important vote today in the House of Commons.

“I am very pleased at the result of today’s vote on Bill C-391,” said Hoeppner, Member of Parliament for Portage—Lisgar. “Today Members of Parliament stood up for Canadians and insisted that they would no longer support the wasteful and ineffective long-gun registry.”

The bill to end the long-gun registry needed the support of Opposition MPs in today’s vote in order to progress. Several NDP and Liberal Members supported the MP’s bill and joined the Conservative caucus in passing Bill C-391.

“While the Liberal Leader and the Leader of the NDP made it clear that they support this waste of taxpayers’ money, some Opposition MPs decided that they would instead represent their constituents, and I am grateful for their support of my bill,” Hoeppner stated. “I also thank Garry Breitkreuz for his contribution to today’s result through his tireless commitment and dedication to this issue,” Hoeppner added.

Hoeppner noted that the long-gun registry did not crack down on criminals as the Liberals promised when they enacted the registry; instead it harassed hard-working farmers, hunters and sports shooters.

Bill C-391 now proceeds to committee in Public Safety for further study.

“Today’s vote is a victory against government waste and mismanagement; it is a victory for law-abiding long-gun owners,” said Hoeppner. “I look forward to continuing to advance this bill at the committee stage,” Hoeppner concluded.

Yes HOO Rahh for the Conservatives. Another fine example of Liberal waste. Probably end up costing tax payers to get out of it. It will be a great day to see it die.

Thanks for the info so far guys...what about transfering ownership of the rifle and shipping it from NL to AB? Do they just lock it in the case and send it as freight on a regular courier?....I guess I should just get the FAC/PAL first..
Also, where do you take the test? Should I do this before I apply to the RCMP?

They will let you challenge the FAC test for a donation; I've handled guns all my life, went in and got the instruction manual. Took it home, read it, went in the next day and wrote the exam, passed the "physical" part of it (safe handling of the mock firearm) and had my FAC to me within a few weeks.

Like others have stated, it's in the works to defeat the Gun Registry, but I imagine that will take some time to pass. As far as shipping from NL to AB, I'm not sure on that one; check with Bass Pro and see what they would recommend - they must do it all the time and could give you valuable info for the private citizen to ship....?

While the Gun Registry is still in effect, it's real easy to transfer ownership over the phone, as long as both parties have their FAC's....

Yes, you are required by law to have a Possession and/or acquisition license if you plan on buying or storing/transporting/hunting with a rifle.
You can challenge the firearm safety course if you know/study your stuff. My wife and I did that at the boat and outdoor show a few years back and they only want a small donation in exchange for the examination. They always have a booth at those shows.
You should take the course if you don't know. Shooting ranges in Calgary have the courses available as well.
Then you d/l the application, fill it out and send it in along with the certificate for the firearms safety, your pictures and payment. They say it will take 2-3 months before you get it back, mine took 4 wks.
You could also take a chance and not bother with any of that like thousands of other people do, but I don't recommend that since you will get charged if you get caught, plus they will confiscate the gun.
If you go hunting you have to have proof of firearm registration as well when the fish cops ask for it... and they will.

You have been asked for registration? Surprising. I never have nor has anybody I know. Fins and Feathers generally despise the registry just like everyone else. The only time I have ever heard of them charging someone with the legislation is if the person is in other trouble. Example being if they kick in someone's door for growing dope and they find unregistered weapons it's just another charge to tack onto a no-good criminal.

I am not suggesting doing anything illegal, all of mine are registered. But they kind of have us by the short curley's. If you want to buy ammo, you have to have the card. A whole lot easier to play ball then get a buddy to buy your ammo every week so you can go trap shooting.

Buddy got his deer last year and just as we were getting ready to drive off, the SRD truck pulled up... They've asked to see the tags, checked the weapons and corresponding paperwork. They were nice about it and even apologized for doing so, but it is their job, it is the law after all and we have to play by the rules if we like it or not until we manage to change it. It sure felt good to drive off with an apology from them rather than a summons to appear in court.
I for one don't have a problem registering... I would prefer if I didn't have to, but if that's what takes to keep my nose clean I'll do it without blinking an eye. Sure don't want a felony charge under the firearms act on my clean record Smile

Go through the hoops and get your rpal. You need to take the course to do so and write the exams. It is worth it. If you are interested in firearms get your restricted at the same time. Sooner you get it done the better. Even if the long gun registry dies you still need your license.

I was just going a get a shotgun years ago but now shooting is my number 1 hobby. Just picked up a .45 1911 today. This is why I suggest getting your RPAL.

actually i believe that if he gives it too you as a gift...you can take it ...check the bylaws on grandfathering...but on the other hand...you may get the itch someday and being above board is always the safest way...the course is easy...i did it and can go shooting coyotes anytime i like...have fun....

Mr Stealth, if you are with somebody who has a PAL then you are okay too shoot but as to transfering guns not overally sure. I agree with andy if you can read english and remember to not point toward your buddy congrats you have a licence and it becomes a pain in the butt getting others to buy your ammo every week, (In the summer we shoot over 500 clay birds in a weekend and yup we got the automatc shooter)

Was talking to one of the staff at the gun store a couple of days ago and they are very low on stock on re-loading stuff. He said that there are rumours that the ammo will go up in price almost double, due to them wanting to mark every single bullet/casing for identification purposes.
Also, they are talking about the primers be manufactured in such way that they are rendered useless in about 3 years' time. Now this is BS as far as I am concerned, but if you are re-loading your own maybe it is a good time to stock up on your supplies.
This is second hand info here so take it with a sack of salt, but I definitely wouldn't put it past them.
You're right about shooting with a buddy's rifle... he has to be within so many feet/yards of where you are in order for it to be legal... more BS. I wonder if he has to have you tied on a leash just to make sure haha.
