I fitted one of these to our CFMOTO 500A. Here, in Australia.
>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>
WHY?
Our bike is normally loaded up, and was a bit sluggish accelerating the first
25/30 metres/yards. After that it was fine. Further down the line, I was going to fit better and probably bigger tyres. That was going to make that problem worse, so I decided to fix the problem sooner rather than later. I did some web research....and found this:
"Suzuki Vinson 500 4x4 models, 07-09 Moose Tracker(import)500 Auto, 07-09 CF Moto 500 4x4 Utility

New kit with complete drop-in roller assemblies

DMT 500C
Suggested list price $174 CAD / $156 USD

A new kit that contains complete drop-in roller assemblies. This kit is designed to re-calibrate the shift pattern to help recover some of the losses from installing oversized tires. Bottom and midrange acceleration and performance are greatly improved. Also aids in performance when operating at higher elevations. This kit can be used with stock or oversized tires, however, when used with stock tires at low elevation it can cause a slight loss of top speed."
This all from: www.daltonindustries.com/atv.asp
It sounded like what I wanted..........
>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>
WHO & WHAT I GOT 4 HOW MUCH?
Turned out the Aus. distributors were Graham & Russel @ ATV OffRoad.
www.atvoffroad.com.au/
About $230 changed hands. I got a new secondary spring, 8 rollers, intructions and a sticker or two.
Fitting took about 2 very casual hours by myself. You do need some skills and special tools. Note that the pulley nut tensions are very important....
And yes, I used the same belt. I do need a spare/replacement and I'll probably score one from ATV OffRoad as well. I've no problems with price or service of these guys.
>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>
THE TEST.
Seat of the pants was as Daltons website stated. Instead of the "I think I can, I think I can, I'm off!", it was a case of "Woo Hoo!" Yellow-exclaim
We actually did some before and after tests, with video. As it turned out the video gives the most accurate timing. I'll post it up later.......
The actual test was a standing start on a bitumen surface over a 150 metres. ( 164yds )
I've long held the opinion that our quad manufacturers are a bit liberal with the claims of "class leading perfomance" and "best in industry power"......They all can't finish in front, and 2nd, 3rd and the rest aren't that far behind. A benchmark is needed, not glossy brochures. Puppy Dog Eyes
>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>
THE RESULTS
At the TRACK.......
The standard CVT gave me a best of 11.11 seconds flat with "about 71km/h at 5800rpm". ( 44.375 mph )
The Dawson modded CVT gave a beast of 10.12 seconds flat at "about 74km/h at 6000rpm. (46.25 mph )
.....................................................................................
That difference was all in the take off, that first 30 metres/yards or so.
The speeds and revs I read off the dash.....
This is 460kg ( 1012lbs ) of LWB base bike and rider.....A second improvement is very good at the 1/4 mile in a car, on a standing 150m, it's amazing.
Top speed is too close to call.
I will point out that just nailing the throttle and going times were slower, but the difference was consistant, about a second quicker.
The best times were classic 1/4 mile stuff, front brake on and load up the transmission, let the brake off and hang on. 2gunsfiring V1
The standard tranny just wasn't putting it to the tyres, the modded tranny had the, now sticky, tyres axle tramping on the bitumen! icon_pelvic_thrust2
Of course, if a person were to compete in this type of event...... Popcornsmiley
On the TRAILS......
It is much smoother down low. A lot less thottle and revs is needed to move off. It certainly feels better pulling uphill and out of slow corners. Enough power is rarely a problem, too much use of it can be. I might have to be more moderate with my thumb in the mud. Smilie Colors1

Sounds like someone is a happy customer. Yellow-biggrin

The metrics are nice and the best way to quantify the purchase, but it is the seat of your pants feels and experience that I want feedback on.

2 questions

1) Can you do a wheelie?
2) Where are the videos.

Appreciate you taking the time to write up the review.

Bill

Yes Bill, I can do a wheelie. Smilie Colors1..... NOW!
Being a heavy, long wheel base with HP in the low 30's you gotta work harder to do it than a shorter more powerful bike.
As it is now, if you put the wieght right back and give the bars a pull, she'll come up in low range pretty easy. Takes a bit more effort in high range.
Before you had no show......
As time goes on, I'll share more of the experience. In the mean-time, my seat of the pants is the low end hole and lag, which only suffered by comparison to more powerful bikes is gone. The response to the thumb is much crisper. I now need less revs to climb over rocks and logs, move off, etc.
We're going up to the "caramel puddles" soon. I'll let you know....
Here is a link to one of the vids. With the front wheels lifting just clear...

And here is the other clip....
www.youtube.com/watch?v=IMgSRvpraKI
And I do ask some leading questions at the end....
Given the way the EPA on both sides of the Pacific are going, A 150meter ( 164yard) sprint may well be the way a lot of us ATV riders can hook up.
On asphalt.
Or do our off-roading on line.
>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>
Sorry, the EPA Stormtroopers are getting up my nose lately.....

I agree Amachines the bike only really needs the centrifugal clutch up grade if the bike is in heavy 4WD situations where all 4 wheels are loaded up big time or towing large loads
I've only noticed clutch slip when i try to race the moto in course, sandy dry beds thats a little wet

Just a update about the CVT kit on tracks. Both one and two up riding shows much better throttle response. Many sections where I would have previously selected low range, it sails through in high.
Fuel consumption is less overall for the same conditions and distance. Where we would have put 10.something litres in, we're now putting in 9.something litres. So about 10% the way and where we ride better.
It just pulls so much better. Whether from a standing start, out of soft ground or uphill. Less throttle and less revs for the same ground speed and pick-up I suppose.
The top speed is still the low 90's. Cruising at 60/65kim/h is more relaxed.
The only downside is if I give it too much in 2wd in deep mud. Instant rooster tails! Smilie Colors1

This was with the standard set up.

And a clip of it riding thru some heavier going....

www.youtube.com/watch?v=HpbggT8naUo

About a thousand revs less than the standard system.....
And a more general note on the bike......
If I do much more of this, I'll have to give a snorkel a serious thought.
The water-proofing of our particular bike though, has been excellent.
On one bad dunking, I had to drain the CVT and airbox. The CVT was full and the airbox got about 2 tablespoons in it. About 20 minutes and she was good to go.
All the electricals have been great. And, they float. And the pull start as a back up is a comfort
. A rule of thumb is that the top of the tyres is deep enough. Smilie Colors1

I will lay off the upgrade on this moto but I will definitely upgrade on the New X6 Mojo when it comes out unless the kits are interchangeable
I haven't watched the video yet I'll do that soon I know the AIR box on our 500A is hopeless the side with the clips is fine but but the left hand side dose not meet up at all and is all worked out of shape dont know what i will do with it yet & i cant find a aftermarket one on any web site I WILL TAKE SOME PICS OF IT & POST THEM so every one can see what I'm on about

True, my airbox is a funny shape/fit. After the first few times I've worked it out. Mine has a low point with a removable tube for drainage and dust inspection. Very simple and it works well. But I was wondering what sort of voodoo witchcraft was involved the first few times. Smilie Colors1
I believe the X6 has a improved clutching. so probably different.
The BIG NEWS is the 800 V-twin is starting production. First hand impressions of the OFFICIAL Australian distributor is that is very compact, very smooth reving and running.
The bad news is that is only destined for the UTV's and side x side. Let It All Out

I agree that my airbox does not seal properly... glad I'm not the only one since I was pretty bitter when I found this defect. It's one of the most important parts of the bike and it's not doing it's job 100%. Mind you I've been in water over my seat and never had a fish tank in my airbox. If anyone has any solutions, let us know!
