Refo,
Welcome. If your Maxxer was sold as an onroad vehicle, it is a good bet that it has a restritor in it. If it is an off road it shouldn't. All you have to do to check is remove the carb and look in the intake flange on the engine side. If the hole gets smaller reach inside and pull the restritor out.
One thing to remember is the Maxxer 400 engine is not a 400. The engine is actually 366cc in displacment. I know that in the MXU chasis it's a very responsive engine. Not a rocket, but a lot of fun. One way of improving proformance might be an EPI Clutch kit.
What kind of speeds are you getting from it?

flat out on the road (it's a road legal version) i was getting 90kph.. ran out of road to give it another go but i don't think i'd get much more from it.
it's got an auto box, does that mean there is still a clutch in there somewhere?? or a torque converter?
i'll get on looking for the restrictor on the weekend, thanks!

Never heard the term "auto box" ? It has CVT transmission with an engagement clutch. So basically there is a centrifical clutch inside the engine that engages and disengages. Then there is a primary clutch and a belt that connects to the secondary clutch. The primary and secondary are what does the "shifting". As the clutches open and close the belt will move up and down and change the "gear ratio".
I recieved a prototype MXU 500IRS in the spring. It was an onroad version and it had the restrictor in it. Wow what a dog of the line. Once I removed it it had plenty of power like the older MXU's. Here in Canada we are not allowed to have an ATV on the roads or highways legally.
The EPI clutch kit for Maxxer is the same as the MXU 375, and will only raise the RPM that the clutch engages at. You would have to remove the external clutches, and remove the side cover from the engine to install the engagment springs. If mechanical work is not your thing I would not recommend trying this one on your own.
I hope this helps you out.

great info, thank you!
i took the carb off today and there is no restrictor, the connecting 'pipe' is all one rubber part directly onto the head. there isn't anything seperate inside.
so no free power this weekend, looks like i'm stuck with standard power untill the warranty runs out.
ah i didn't realise it was a CVT because of the stick and the non scooter shaped gearbox. learnt something new today.
