First and most importantly, we would like to welcome everyone to ATVFRONTIER.com. We (Honda moderators) have a personal goal of making the Honda section the best and most informative site on the WWW. Please tell all your friends about our site (no matter what brand of ATV they may own).

Every once in a while, some very good advice or informative post comes along that is worth keeping for future reference. Unfortunately they tend to get lost with time. This section was created (by Snowride) so that all this valuable information stays where you can easily find it and use it for future reference quickly and easily.

If you have any questions regarding any of these topics or have some valuable info which should be posted here, start a "new topic" in the Honda section (or email the appropriate brand Moderator) of the forum and someone will be more than happy to assist you. If you see something misinterpreted or is confusing, please tell us and we will make the appropriate corrections.

DISCLAMIER:

Everything listed here comes from the web and several different individuals and by no means does ATV Frontier, the person posting it or the original author, take any responsibility for any mod or anything you have done with reference to what is written here. After all, all modifications to a quad stray from factory specs and/or sometimes safety and would not be recommended by Honda. Anything you do, you do so at your own risk.

Sincerely,

ATVFRONTIER.com

Honda Recall

April 14, 2005

Honda recalls 200,000 ATVs for steering rod danger

The Associated Press

WASHINGTON - American Honda Motor Co. is recalling about 200,000 all-terrain vehicles after receiving more than two dozen reports of steering rods separating, which could cause drivers to crash.
The Torrance, Calif., company has not received any injury reports related to its 2004 and 2005 FourTrax ATVs, the Consumer Product Safety Commission said Thursday.

Honda motorcycle dealers nationwide sold the ATVs, which were made in the United States and came in red, olive, yellow or blue, from August 2003 to February 2005 for $3,600 to $8,000.

Recalled model numbers:

—2005 TRX250TE/TM

—2004-2005 TRX350FE/FM/TE/TM

—2004-2005 TRX400FA/FGA

—2005 TRX500FE/FM/TM

—2005 TRX500FA/FGA

—2005 TRX650FA/FGA

Consumers are urged to stop riding the ATVs. The company will directly contact registered owners and provide free repair, the CPSC said. More information is available by calling Honda at 866-784-1870, weekdays 11:30 a.m.-8 p.m. EDT.

I just called Honda Canada and any of the ATV's listed that were sold in Canada are also included in this recall.

They started mailing notices out this week

I'm posting this Maintainance/Fix for angle sensor trouble on Rubicons.

Recently over the past 1 1/2-2 months I've been having trouble with my 02 Rubicon. I used this site to help get me pointed in the right direction. I just got to say this is a great website for reference of similar issues on honda related machines.

Over the past as I said two months I have been having trouble with the blinking screen of death (trouble code five) and limp mode.
I recently sent my machine to a local shop and had them trouble shoot this a problem as an angle sensor. Hense the sensor was replaced and reinitialized (computer) for a total of just under $300.00 CDN.
The machine was good for a short period of time and then the blinking screen of death again.
To make a long story short I have been fighting with this problem on my own since the service did'nt take (ticked off). As it turns out it was no fault of the local shop.

The info I referenced here on this site for sealing the entire wireing harness with Dielectric I thought was a good bet as far as where to start.

This last Thurs/Fri June 2-3 05 I took the machine into the shop where I work did a complete teardown of the machine (body etc ).
I went from the back starting with the computer and voltage regulator right to the front and sealed up every connector on the machine with Dielectric.
Sealed each silicon gasket (inside connector) and front side ang backside of every connector where terminals plug into connector.
Found water or traces of water in numberous connectors. Blew the connectors out with compressed air blow gun and then grease sealed them.

There are two main areas to be concerned with on a Rubicon and probably other Honda models as well . The right rear wheel well area, three connectors relating to the computer at the back and three connectors at the front of the right rear wheel well.
Found traces of water in all three computer related connectors and two at the front shift selector connector, vehicle speed sensor. the alternator connector was good (the larger of the three).
The wiring for the angle sensor is hard wired right from the sensor connector to the computer terminal connector.
Sealed up every connector eleswhere, reassembled the machine.
Loaded the machine up and brought her home. went to unload and guess what, blinking screen of death (error code five again).

I was beginning to think I was looking at a ECM replacement (NOT GOOD) $780.00 CDN.

Saturday morning I made the decision to test the angle sensor one more time with the OHM meter and low and behold the reading was anything but consistent the needle was jumping all over the scale.
Now as I said this sensor was just replaced at a local shop so this is making no sense.
I made the decision to open up the sensor even though there not made to be serviceable. from the underside there is a cap thats thermo sealed (Melted plastic seal).
I got the sensor apart without damaging the plastic body and looked inside. Nothing except what looked like a little piece of dust.
Blew it out and be danged if it didn't spray water . BLOODY WATER.

Now this is the sensor the computer reads to controll the electric shift mechanisms finding water in the sensor itself told me in my mind that I had probably found the problem.

So I blew out any remaining water took the sensor and blew it dry with a hair dryer. Plastic welded the back cap on again reinstalled it resealed the silicon inner seal for the connector with dielectric, erased trouble codes and reinitialized the computer again.
All looked well. Loaded her up and took it took a close by riding area and put her through water up to the gas tank and not a glitch. I pounded her through heavy water for another 1 1/2 hours and not a glich. It's shifting better than it has in months now.

This is the clincher, the sensor itself is not water tight. The sensor is only water tight because of the seal on the connector.
Through possible shrinkage of the silicon seal through heat of the trans, or another theory cold water cooling the switch and contracting the air inside the switch creating a vacume sucking water in. Or both. Either way if you own a Honda with a sensor in a high heat area you had better seal it up good with dielectric as I said I've chased this problem for some time now.

In haveing this sensor apart I have seen there is absolutely little to go wrong with them except for water.

I thought I'd do the fellow honda guys a favor for some preventative maintainance here.

Happy Riding

Got a letter this week for my wife's 350FE.

"Product Update Campaign" to replace the Shift Angle Sensor. It may cause a "No Shift" condition when using elctronic shift mode. You then have to use the manual shifter to change gears.

If you're already paid to have it replaced Honda will reimburse you.

2004-2005 350FE and 2004 350TE are affected.
