Hi All,

I tore my first CV boot a few weeks ago on my 450KQ and last weekend
got around to fitting a new one. I must say it was a very simple
process. Taking about 1 hour. I did not buy a genuine boot at $100ea, however
found a company that will supply the boot, grease and clamps for
AU$12.50. Just have to measure up what you require for them to match it. I
also purchased a used clamp tensioning tool off eBay for $1.50. I tore
the rear outer which requires the inner to be removed to get to it.
Basically this is how it goes.

1. Remove wheel.

2. Remove split pin and remove main hub nut. (27mm Socket)

3. Remove top A- Arm to hub connecting bolt. (14mm socket and 13mm
spanner)

4. Slide drive shaft out of hub and lower hub out of the way. (Take
care not to damage wheel bearing seal)

You will now have the drive shaft dangling out of the diff.

5. Give the drive shaft a good yank or two, to remove it from the diff,
taking care not to damage the seal (There is a small compression clip
to retain it)

#Note. I jacked the rear of my bike as high as it would go on a 2.5T
Floor jack and no oil was lost from the diff when the shaft was removed.

6. Cut the CV Boot clamps, and slide back the inner boot from the CV
housing. Clean the grease out from the first part of the hub, and you
will see a small retaining clip a few millimetres from the inside edge of
the hub. Pry this out with a scriber or seal pick to allow the CV
bearing to come out of the hub.

7. Remove the circlip from the end of the shaft to allow the CV bearing
to be removed.

8. Slide the old boots off and give everything a good clean.

9. Fit new boots and clamps and assemble in reverse order.

# Note. Take note which way the CV bearing comes off the shaft. The end
with the slightly larger diameter goes to the outside end of the shaft
with the circlip against it.

I would guess the front shaft would be as per the rear, except the
brake calliper may need to be removed. The CV Boots are the same front and
rear, however differ from inside to outside in length by 20mm.

Cheers Giddy.

Giddy,

I tore a rear inner CV boot this weekend.

Gonna have to give this a go.

Question for you...did you change the CV itself? If not, has it caused you any problems? Reason I ask is that once dirt gets in there, it's most likely shot, no? I don't know how far into my ride it tore, but there was some crud mixed in with the grease when I discovered it AFTER I had loaded my quad up at the end of the day.

It is so easy to change out the inner boot. I would just wash it out with solvent and wiggle it to see if the joint feels loose. If it all feels tight then you should be good to go. It doesn't make sense that you would have to change the joint when you tear a boot.

MeYammy,

I really couldn't see you wearing out your cv. Like Cdn says above. Give it a good clean with solvent and re-grease. Mine is ok. When you pull it apart look for dirt in the hub race and score marks on the balls. I really doubt it will be bad.

The tolerances in these cv's are not super fine IMO, and it is not a high speed C3 tolerance electric motor bearing or the like.

I got my boots cheap at a cv repair shop. Don't stress...it's a piece of cake.

Cheers Giddy.

Hi Giddy,

I have a question regarding the outer cv joint. Can you take it out of the axle housing or do you just clean it the best you can in the housing? If so, what type of solvent do you recommend?

Thanks.

Heaps of us in Weipa have bought them from him. Under $20 each. Just measure them up before you ring.

There would have to be someone in Townsville also who would be closer to you.

Cheers Giddy.

Captainnemo.......I'm not 100% sure as it's been a while. If there is not a small retaining ring like the inner it may be crimped in. I use brakeclean solvent.

Cheers Giddy.

Hey...what type of tyres are on your Honda? Any good? I'll be looking for new ones next year maybe.

BTW....how do you get your Mrs to help fix a quad?

Cheers Giddy.
