We used to have an integrated spellchecker in the forums that many of you used (and many didn't, like me Embarassed ). It turns out that it was the biggest user of database resources on ATVF. Basically anytime someone used it, it invoked intensive queries on the word dictionary in the database. When we were busy and someone did this the slowdown was noticeable.

The solution is that all the browsers out there today have either built-in or add-on spellcheckers freely available. They do the spellchecking on the cleints end before the text gets submitted to the server so the DB doesn't get hammered.

Here's some links to get you started:

Spellchecker for Firefox (Fantastic Browser BTW) also works for Mozilla
Spellchecker for Internet Exploder
Spellchecker for Opera
Apples Safari browser has built in spellchecking

If only the rest of IE did! Cool If your PC's security is important to you I HIGHLY recommend you use a different browser. There is a reason why Firefox is the fastest growing browser out there.

My FireFox spell checker also works very well. Not to mention the browser is pretty good to Wink

I didn't think anyone used the spellchecker!

I don't blame ya for cannin' it though. Its not worth the use of resources it requires, IMO.

Those who use macintosh computers and Mac OS X have a built-in spell checker in their OS. I have both a Mac and a PC, but as I use my Mac right now and type this response, any spelling errors are underlined in red as I type.
